Live CDs

Live OS distribution (LiveDistros) is hugely popular with open source fans but may be new to Windows addicts. In a LiveCD, the operating system is stored in a bootable CD or a DVD which can be directly used to boot to the OS without an installation. Booting with a LiveCD does not modify your hard drive structure or change any of your current settings.

For example, assume you are running Windows XP. You want to try out Linux just to get a feel of it but the separate partition creation and time consuming installation processes don't encourage you to do it. You can easily use a Linux LiveCD such as Ubuntu Live. Just download the Ubuntu LiveCD image, burn it and boot Ubuntu Linux without complicated installation procedures or separate perditions. Once you are done experimenting, shut down the PC, remove the LiveCD and reboot. Windows XP (or whatever your previous OS was) will boot just like before!

The Live OS performance is greatly reduced due to the fact that it is run from a CD or DVD which has a slower data transfer rate. You will also not be able to save anything in live mode. This is why it's good for experimenting.

Some while back, we talked about the pros and cons of SLT's new ADSL package which has a 1GB download limit. Users of this limited ADSL package will find this software extremely useful as it makes life easier by keeping track of your bandwidth usage.

BWMeter is a powerful bandwidth meter, monitor and traffic controller, which measures, displays and controls all traffic to/from your computer or on your network. Unlike other products, it can analyze the data packets (where they come from, where they go, which port and protocol they use). This makes it possible to distinguish between local and internet traffic for example. BWMeter can also be used for traffic control by setting a speed limit for all kinds of connections or restricting access to certain internet sites. It creates statistics for all computers in your network, measuring and displaying all LAN traffic as well as download / upload from the internet. You can even define filters which show your transfer with certain internet addresses (e.g. to see how much data you download from your favorite news server). BWMeter is ideal for home users to get an overview of how much bandwidth they use, as well as small to large businesses, where one computer can control the traffic and maintain the statistics of downloaded / uploaded data of all computers in the network.

SLT's new ADSL package: Good or Bad?

Sri lanka Telecom (The incumbent fixed line operator in Srilanka), in its latest drive to boost subscriber base, has re-branded SLT ADSL as SLT Broadband and launched a new budget ADSL package to capture new market segments. Is the new package as beneficial as it sounds?

New ADSL packge Features and conditions

* Monthly rental Rs.1000/=
* Usage Allowance 1GB and additional usage will be charged Rs.250/= for each 250MB blocks
* Connection fee Rs.500/=
* Download 512Kbps and upload 128Kbps
* Available in all current ADSL areas

Usage allowance term simply means that you will be charged extra if your usage (Web surfing, e-mail checking, downloading, TV/radio streaming or basically anything which you do using SLT ADSL connection) exceeds 1GB.

In our opinion, the package is not worth it. What can you do with a 1GB limit on your ass? 1GB might have been a huge amount some years back but this is the information age for fucks sake! Even a simple login to Windows Live Mail is bound to consume more than 2MB per try. Your 1GB limit will exceed before you know it and you might even end up paying a rental higher than for ADSL Home Express (You download 2.25GB --> You pay Rs 2250 which is the same amount as the monthly rental for Home Express package)

Don't even think about downloading torrents or software using this connection as you will end up with a huge monthly bill due to additional usage charge.

The Internet evolves, file sizes increase, traffic consumption goes up, web services are born, everything is downloadable, SLT puts a 1GB limit to its budget 'broadband' connection. It just doesn't make sense.

Conclusion:

Stay away from the Rs 1000 package. It's basically a faster dial up connection. If you are planning to upgrade to ADSL go for the Home Express package (512K Up/ 128K Down, Rs 2250 per month, unlimited usage) and experience Internet without restrictions or fear of exceeded bandwidth limitations.

Windows Live Writer

Windows Live Writer is a free application designed by Microsoft which enables desktop blog publishing. The software is easy to use and features a user friendly GUI. Download, add your blog to WLW, configure (there is a wizard) and you are good to go. You can just type your blog entry in WLW and format using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor. You don't even have to open a web browser to publish a blog entry. It's all integrated. (Finally, something Cool from Microsoft.)

We at FILEnetworks have been using it for a while and it's been a smooth operation so far. Keep this in mind though : It's still beta. However during our usage, we found no critical bugs which are usually present in beta releases.
